ROUTE 29 SHEET FLOW IMPROVEMENT - FINAL SCOPE DEVELOPMENT, NJ

This section of Route 29 had very little slope and cross slope, which created poor drainage condition and winter hazard due to freezing. Historic nature of the road, being in Delaware & Raritan Canal area, and rare plant species created challenge in design. Project included design of drainage improvement, and replacement of deteriorated cross drains. It also included cutting rock surface and design of retaining wall compatible with the environment. Water quality and contractibility of narrow roadway were also issue of the design.
BET Consultants, as Prime Consultant, designed "Grass Paver block" shoulders with trench drains, and rock faced retaining walls, as well as drainage outfalls. Coordinated with several environmental agencies, such as U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, NJDEP's wetland, Green Acres, Stream Encroachment, Endangered Species and Historic Preservation divisions, D&R Canal Commission, and local governments.
Special design of retaining walls and shoulder pavement was prepared to maintain historic nature of this roadway along D&R Canal and Goat Quarry. |
